Young people living in an orphanage in Topolevo village, Khabarovskiy krai, learned about the problem of domestic violence and its negative consequences during a training conducted by the Khabarovsk organization Family Planning on 27-28 April, 2007.
The training was held to inform orphans about domestic violence, practicing non-conflictual relations and educating them on self-protection methods they can undertake in dangerous situations. At the beginning of the training, most children couldn’t even identify domestic violence situations and were not sure who to apply to if they experienced violent acts. Various techniques used in the course of the training such as exercises, role-plays, and group discussions made it possible to involve all children in the process of learning. By the end of the training, the orphans were able to clarify and discuss many points they hadn’t known before. The knowledge they received will help them to build non-violent relationships with the people in their lives and protect themselves in case of emergencies.
