Khabarovsk student-mentors share their experience of conducting anti-violence events for their peers
On April 20, 2007, eightmembers of the youth club Leader, organized by NGO Maximum trainers Elena Gubina and Irina Shapirova, met to discuss their involvement in the Path to Success! program. The trainers talked to psychology, social work and other students about innovative methods for organizing and conducting trainings and informational seminars on the issue of domestic violence. The students shared their experiences conducting anti-violence events for their peers, discussed successes and failures, and talked together about how to cope with difficulties in finding common language with a group and helping those from at-risk families. Since domestic violence is widespread, there are always children in the class from families where violence is the norm; thus, it is emotionally difficult for them to speak about this issue. In such situations it is very important for trainers to be sensitive, to respect the opinion of participants, and to be able to find the right approach to help these children cope with their tragedies. All the students agreed that they really enjoyed working with the youth, and that this experience helped them become more confident in their knowledge and skills. They are sure that due to the initiative they are undertaking, more young people will learn about the problem and will try to be more helpful to those who need urgent assistance.
