“PATH TO SUCCESS!” PROGRAM PARTNERS LEARN ABOUT INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCES WITH GENDER-FOCUSED EDUCATION
In early February, Julie Heifetz, an American specialist in the sphere of gender education, offered volunteer technical assistance and training on gender themes for “Path to Success!” NGO partner trainers and teachers. Julie’s initial training on gender issues was conducted as part of a Training of Trainers (TOT) held in Khabarovsk for program grantees. Julie also conducted additional 3-day trainings for teachers and student mentors in both Khabarovsk and Blagoveschensk the following week.
During these trainings, Julie provided participants with information on western approaches to issues such as gender equality, gender analysis, and gender focus in education. The participants learned how the educational system in the US works to provide equal educational opportunities for boys and girls, and what issues American teachers have to overcome to make this system work. The information was timely and pertinent to NGO trainers and teachers because gender-focused education is an emerging issue on the state, regional and local levels in Russia. According to the majority of the training participants, the knowledge gained during the trainings will be a valuable resource as NGOs and government bodies work to develop gender-focused training programs and curricula for students, youth and adults.
